Elements & Undertones: An Exhibition by Mark Hope & Boyd Waites

6 - 30 April 2023

Boyd Waites Biography:

Boyd has been drawing and painting since an early age. He attended the Chester School of Art foundation course and then graduated with a BA(Hons) degree at Central St Martins in the UK.

Recently, he has returned to Abstract Expressive Landscape painting full time, operating between Studios at Lake of Bays and Oakville, both in Ontario.

Boyd has always been interested in our natural surroundings and the impact of humans on the environment. This is expressed in the landscape, weather, air, sky, sea as light, moods and tones. It’s about the natural landscape but mostly it’s about our inner condition and the sensory nature of people and moments that enrich and inform our condition.

Mark Hope - Artist Statement

I am an observer. I always have been an observer. I can trace my fascination with observing nature to my very early exposure to camping with my family. Those experiences gave me the opportunity to live through my senses. I express what my senses encounter through painting. I count myself luck to have a skill that allows such expression.
I am a modern impressionist oil painter after the 19th century French Impressionists and the Canadian Group of Seven and Tom Thompson. I love to explore how light shapes the landscape. My subjects run from traditional landscapes to the less obvious subjects I find in my travels. I am largely self-taught. I also teach beginner and intermediate oil painting.
