Sandra Manzi

The inspiration for my work comes from observations of everyday urban life.
Artist Statement:
I work primarily in oil paint of people going about their everyday life. My particular focus is on urban street life and my
inspiration comes from the everyday world where chance encounters, mundane events, and
curiosity of the people around me contribute to my creativity. I look for something poignant within a scene that effects me emotionally in a way that I would not be able to put into words, something familiar to us which speaks of the human condition. The process starts with me wandering, camera in hand, to find and capture raw images of reality which I then translate into paintings. My goal is to portray the life forces within my subjects as expressed through a split-second gesture. How much can a simple ephemeral moment tell us about who we are, or speak of the human condition? These are the questions I wish to relay in my paintings. They depict ephemeral moments of people going about their everyday lives, and familiar places and things which often get overlooked in the rush of contemporary life. I’m intrigued by the idea of painting a fleeting moment that is very familiar to all of us but will never be seen in that same way again.
They’re people in shared spaces like outdoor festivals, museums, public sidewalks, beaches, grocery stores, and cafes. It is here with my camera as my sketchbook that I start to explore universal themes related to human behavior and identity. These quick snapshots of urban life then get slowed done for me to absorb through the act of painting.
